Economic Woes Present Open Source VoIP Opportunities

But what I don’t get is why more people aren’t talking up the fact that the current economic woes present an amazing opportunity for open source VoIP. That’s right. I think that:

Logitech buys SightSpeed for $30M
Logitech International, the Swiss manufacturer of PC peripherals, announced the acquisition of SIP-based video communications company SightSpeed for around $30 million Tuesday. The deal is expected to close in early November, following completion of standard closing procedures and conditions.
In a release, Logitech stated SightSpeed’s video technology and research and development team would allow the manufacturer to develop new video solutions for the home market. Logitech claimed the merger would produce “future video calling initiatives that can enable cross-platform video communications with an intuitive, lifelike experience, for people sitting in front of a personal computer or with their family in a living room.”
Logitech, perhaps best known for computer mice it makes, is making a serious play into the nascent personal video communications market with the SightSpeed buy. It already sells high-end video cameras for online video conferencing and chat, and some VoIP equipment as well.
“With this acquisition, we are significantly augmenting our current video R&D resources to help us move more quickly toward our goals for video services that complement the way people socialize, communicate and enjoy entertainment,” said Junien Labrousse, executive vice president of Logitech’s Products group, in the Logitech release.
There was no mention in the release of whether SightSpeed’s 25 employees would continue to operate out of their Fremont, Calif., office, but Logitech’s U.S. HQ happens in Fremont too, so any relocation should be relatively seamless.

Back in December I met Hubert Michaux from Netvibes at LeWeb 3 in Paris. At that time they launched their brand new version called “Netvibes Ginger” (still in private beta but will open mid-february). Fortunately I am one of the early beta testers and thanks to a recent post on Facebook by Orli I just created our JAJAH Netvibes Ginger Universe page.
“One private page, one Universe - Create and personalize a netvibes Universe
page just for yourself or publish one for your friends, family, everyone! A Universe is your very own personal dashboard that’s updated live directly from all your favorite Web services (email, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, widgets) and media content (blogs, podcasts, video). Everything you enjoy on the Web, available at a glance, all in one place — spend less time surfing and logging in from site to site and more time enjoying your web, your way.”

Netvibes let’s you create a personalized startpage for your browser. It is organized into tabs, with each tab containing user-defined modules. You can choose out of thousands of useful services and widgets to create a startpage which contains your most used services and information at-a-glance. And of course there is also a JAJAH widget for your Netvibes start page.

So, check out our Netvibes Ginger JAJAH Universe, create your own Universe or browser startpage and include our sweet JAJAH web-activated telephony widget in there.
(Using iGoogle or Pageflakes? Of course you can add a JAJAH widget to your iGoogle or Pageflakes startpage too)

Sprint To Keep Nextel, ‘Rejuvinate’ iDEN - Credit crunch means they’ll have to make the best of it…

Sprint’s acquisition of Nextel was one of the worst telecom decisions in recent years, with the merger offering consumers little more than an endless stream of customer support headaches. It was also a financial disaster for Sprint, Nextel’s value declining from $35 billion when acquired in 2005, to less than $5 billion today. Originally, Sprint had hinted that they’d be offloading the acquisition, but tight credit markets mean Sprint will probably hold on to Nextel for now, and says they’re going to work hard to “rejuvinate” the iDen business.
