Here is a nice round up of some of the news coming out of LA at the IT Expo if, like me, you weren’t able to make it out.

  • Aastra’s New DECT solution - Aastra’s previous SIP DECT solution worked like a champ and with WiFi phones losing their luster, the Aastra MBU 400 could be a home run.
  • SIP Print debuts call recording appliance - Never heard of SIP Print and with most phone system’; return true” onmouseout=”top.window.status=”; return true” target=”_blank”>phone systems these days featuring the ability to record calls, their appliance might face some hurdles ahead, but if you are in need of call recording functionality, check them out.
  • Junction Networks certifies another handset manufacturer - Looks like my pals at Junction Networks are continuing to grow their ecosystem in announcing that Aastra handsets now work with Junction’s OnSIP hosted service.
  • Phonevite opens up API - One-to-many phone broadcasting service Phonevite, who in less then a year is already profitable, has released their API - look for some interesting mash-up’s to come from this.
  • Jonathan tells us what most have known for a few years - VoIP is dead? No, it’s not, but as Jonathan says, it is no longer as important as it once was thanks to IM, video and SMS.

SPOTLIGHT: VoIP in Thailand master plan

Voip News No Comments »

SPOTLIGHT: VoIP in Thailand master plan

Thailand’s National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is promoting local VoIP software development to reduce the country’s “heavy reliance” on imports, and the project is part of an industry master plan to ultimately export Thailand-developed technology.

As the worldwide market moves to IP, industry leaders see the potential for growth. Currently, only two Thai companies produce VoIP software and IP PBX products.  In 2006, Thailand imported $260 million in telecommunications and IT equipment. It also imports up to 40 million mobile handsets per year.

NTC’s R&D arm is promoting projects in several key areas, including VoIP, wireless broadband access, optical communications, and next generation networks.

iPOD Was Invented In 1979! By Kane Kramer.

image from Dailymail

Burst com that supposed to be holding a bunch of patents that people are calling too broad has settled with Apple out of court (Ha! Nice move, Burst!). This has come after Apple bringing out a British inventor, Kane Kramer, who sketched up developed a prototype of a very iPOD like device in 1979, as seen above. As we all know, iPODs has been used for other than music, like for VoIP with SIP for IPod.
A few companies like Microsoft had settled with Burst regarding these patents earlier. May thinking to get them on good bye patent! But there supposedly more fighting with Burst like apple. Burst in their case against Apple said iPOD was covered under a patent that was awarded in 1990!

DOCSIS 3.0 Spreads Globally - 120Mbps cable hits Europe…

Voip DSL-Reports No Comments »

DOCSIS 3.0 Spreads Globally - 120Mbps cable hits Europe…

Earlier DOCSIS cable networks can only support transmissions within a single downstream 6 MHz radio frequency (RF) channel, limiting maximum throughput to around 40Mbps (shared). DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades will allow tuning into multiple 6 MHz channels through channel bonding technology, offering shared downstream data rates of 160 Mbps or higher and upstream data rates of 120 Mbps. Downstream speeds could theoretically reach as high as 320Mbps — thanks to new eight channel bonding chipsets.

Channel bonding combines multiple quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) channels to ultimately offer cable broadband customers faster speeds. While DOCSIS 3.0 may not be here yet, ARRIS, Motorola, and Cisco are releasing pre-cert hardware that takes advantage of these advancements. We’ve been seeing a growing number of pre-cert 50-100Mbps cable solutions popping up in markets such as the UK, South Korea, and Singapore.

Comcast is the only cable operator in the U.S. to deploy pre-certification DOCSIS 3.0 technology at speeds of 50Mbps, but so far that’s only in one market. Videotron was the first carrier in north America to offer pre-cert speeds, delivering both 30Mbps ($64.95) and 50Mbps ($79.95) tiers with 30Gb and 50GB caps, respectively.

This week Europe got in on the pre-cert action, a company by the name of Liberty Global saying they’re offering 120Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 speeds in Amsterdam. “The launch of our Fiber Power broadband services in Europe marks another milestone in cable’s long-standing superiority of DSL,” insists Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries. Liberty says they’ll launch the product in Switzerland and Austria before the end of this year, and the rest of their European markets by the end of 2009.

You’ll notice that none of these announcements go out of their way to mention upstream speeds, largely because upstream channel bonding is still being worked on. The result is some rather top heavy tiers being offered in many of these markets (such as 100Mbps/2Mbps). Back to the States, Comcast has promised to have DOCSIS 3.0 technology deployed to 20% of their footprint by the end of this year, and their entire customer base by the end of 2010.

Hi,

Many of you must be knowing about Ibibo. Ibibo is a social networking website much similar to orkut but having much more features. People from India must be by now using Ibibo to make free STD calls in India. I posted about method to make unlimited std calls that is free calls from India to India using Ibibo. The post received large number of hits.

Now Ibibo has launched imobile. You can now call or send SMSs to anyone anywhere in the world - absolutely FREE! Yes you heard it right. Ibibo can be used to make calls from any country to any country including India, Pakistan, Cuba, Philippines, Dubai. Actually now people from country besides India can also register with Ibibo call for free service (Imobile).

  • Send unlimited free SMSs to anyone anywhere in the world.
  • Each call can last up to 2 minutes, you start with 10 free minutes of call time.

The only restriction is each call is limited to 2 minutes, however the constraints of 10 minutes can be easily done off by creating multiple accounts.

India can be also called for free using Rebtel Exclusive voucher code (”freepctophone“) but the best part about Ibibo Imobile service is, it can be used to call destinations like Cuba, Philippines, Saudi, Dubai etc where call rates are so high. Even a 2 minute call is charged too much.

Lets see how it can be used to make unlimited free calls to India and Other destinations. I have added screenshots to help people make free calls.

Requirements -: Internet connection, Mobile phone.

1. In order to make call to your friend say living in Mumbai, and you living in USA. You need to create two accounts on Ibibo. First your account, second account for your friend. Either make a account for him yourself, or ask him to do the same.

2. For making an account, visit Ibibo. Sign up.

3. Now you need to link up your mobile number to that account. They have a service called iMobile. It is automatically added to your account. Check the left sidebar. You can also visit iMobile directly.

4. Click on link your number.

5. Select your country and enter your Mobile number.

6. They will send you verification Sms.

7. Ask your friend to do the same, or if you are register on his behalf, do same procedure but with his number ( number which you want to call ).

8. Add him as your friend in Ibibo. For that go to his profile, and click add as friend. Ask him to confirm your friendship.

9. To make call to your friend, go to iMobile. It will show you your free remaining minutes and name of friends you can call for free.

10. Click call now in fornt of the your friends name.

11. You call will be connected. They will first call you, then your destination number.

12. Ibibo gives only 10 free minutes every month, after you finish them off. Delink your number by click on the this link.

13. Now register for another account with another email address, with same number. DO the same procedure. You will get 10 more minutes.

14. Do this as many times as you want.

Workaround to make unlimited calls :

  • You can create multiple accounts with ibibo and link same number any number of time.
  • For each account you get 10 free minutes, if you create 10 accounts you get 100 free minutes.
  • To make account with Ibibo, you need not to verify your email address. (use any email id). So account creation takes no more than 30 seconds.
  • Earn 3 minutes of call time for every friend invited who join.

Do let us know whether you were able to make free calls using Ibibo, and which country to and from you placed calls. You can post your queries in comment section of the post.

Free Calls to Russia : Flashphone

Free Voip-Calls No Comments »

Free Calls to Russia : Flashphone
Hi,

Flashphone is a though quite a old voip service, but the service has not been featured on the blog. Many people want to call Russia, there are many free services but Flashphone seems most appropriate.

Flashphone is a free-of-charge web-service which allows you to call from the internet page. You don’t need to install anything, no download. You just need an internet connection(sufficient bandwidth), microphones or headphones. These type of services have taken the IP telephony to a new level.

In order to make calls using Flashphone.

1. Visit Flashphone.
2. Register for the service. (Takes few minutes).
3. Login and make calls directly from your browser.

You also need to have Adobe Flash player ver 9.0 or above installed in your computer. As it is required to make calls using it. You can also use flashphone on Pocket PC devices, you need to download and install Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC for that. You’ll be able to use flashphone after installation.

These are Free PC to phone calls. Free calls to Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg) are available after registration. There is no mention about the number of minutes per call. I guess there is no limit.

You can also use Flashphone in your SIP device(With X-lite etc). Sip settings are available in your account interface. They have also mentioned that users will be able to call other destinations using SIP settings.

I am not sure whether users will be able to call other destinations like India, Pakistan directly from Flashphone website. If someone can confirm on this, then Flashphone will prove to be a great service for Free calls to India and Pakistan.

Just to remind our blog readers about some of the free calling offer-:

1. Free one hour calls to India : Rebtel voucher code

2. Free 2.5$ credit by Tpad exclusive offers for our blog readers.

3. Cheap unlimited calls to Pakistan by Yupeephone.
